Many small business owners launch themselves into social media without enough planning or consideration.  The result is not only that the medium doesn’t deliver the hoped for results, but also valuable time has been wasted.  Here are 3 of the most common social media mistakes you should try to avoid.

TALKING WHEN NO ONE IS LISTENING

OK, you only find time to get onto Facebook or Twitter at 2am when everything else is finished.  But there is not much point posting your brilliant thoughts on any social network when everyone you want to reach is asleep.  The easiest way around this is to pre-program your content.

IT’S ALL ABOUT ME!

Social media is just that….social.  People sign up for Facebook, Twitter and Linked In because they want to interact with friends, colleagues or celebrities.  They didn’t sign up so they could read your sales messages.  If you want to place an ad, stick to TV or newspapers.  If you want to have a conversation that might lead to a sale, use social media.

LOST IN THE BUZZ

It’s easy to get caught up in the buzz of the latest social media network.  Vine, Instagram and Pinterest are certainly cool, but that doesn’t mean your business should be jumping on the bandwagon just because there’s a lot of hype.  Social Media is time consuming and the more networks you are on, the more time consuming (read costly) it becomes.  You want to make sure your time is invested in the media that will deliver the biggest bang for your buck.  Don’t join a network unless you are clear that it will reach the people you want to talk to in the right environment.
